GEORGE MASTERMAN GILLET 1899 - | |||||||||
Gorge Gillett was a prominent Quaker banker by the start of the war in 1914. Well known for his philanthropic work, he had been involved in local politics and charitable organisations in the Finsbury Metropolitan Borough since its creation in 1900 and would become the MP for the area in 1923. During the First World War, he was part of the Committee of the Friends’ Ambulance Unit, which provided aid and medical support for soldiers and civilians on the Western Front. As part of the committee he would have been instrumental in securing places for Conscientious Objectors to work with the FAU after the introduction of Conscription in 1916. A large number of local Quaker COs went into the FAU in 1916, which perhaps shows George Gillett’s helping hand.
