ARTHUR THOMAS FRESHWATER 1882 - | |||||||||
Arthur Freshwater was a Socialist who lived in Hornsey when he applied for exemption as a CO in 1916. He grew up in one of the poorest areas of St Pancras, while his father worked as a porter for the station and hotel. These early experiences helped to shape Arthur's convictions that there could be "only one war, the class war", as he stated at his Tribunal hearing. Arthur was determined not to become involved in a war that he believed was fought for profit at the expense of the working class.
