Fred from, Settle, Yorks, was manager of Ford Ayrton silk mill, Bentham, Yorkshire. A Quaker, he volunteered for the Friends’ War Victims’ Relief Service, working at Sermaize, France, where he was joined by his wife as a fellow worker. He was allowed CO exemption from military service conditional on continuing with the work.
