ERIC ROY CALVERT 1898 - 1922

support

Eric Calvert was a Quaker CO working in the Post Office in 1916. Like many Quaker COs he volunteered to work in the Friends Ambulance Unit when he was conscripted, and his local Tribunal thought this was a good compromise. Eric worked for the FAU on "General Service" from 1916 to 1918 at the Wallingford Farm Training Colony, helping to prepare FAU members for hospital and civil aid work both at home and abroad. Eric must have been truly committed to helping others as, once the war had ended, he was soon back working with the Quakers in relief work, travelling to Austria and France from 1919 to 1921 with the Friends War Victims Relief Service. The aid and support Eric's work gave to the victims of war shows that Conscientious Objection wasn't passive, but was a real commitment to making a better and more peaceful world.
