FRANK CHARLES ADE 1892 - | |||||||||
Frank Ade was attending University in Cambridge when war was declared in August 1914. By 1916 the war had forced most Cambridge Colleges to close, and Frank found himself back at home in Brixton, where he faced the Lambeth Tribunal as a Conscientious Objector in July 1916. The Lambeth Tribunal took note of his Quaker principles and objection to warfare, and passed him exempt from Combatant Service provided that he joined the Friends Ambulance Unit (FAU). Frank quickly joined the FAU and by August was working on board the HMHS Glenart Castle, a hospital ship ferrying and treating wounded soldiers from the Front to Britain. Frank must have left the Glenart Castle before February 1918, as he was not aboard when the ship was sunk by a German U-boat. It is likely that Frank went on to work in Hospitals in Britain, as he was still working in the FAU service until his discharge in early 1919.
