WILLIAM HERBERT ADAMS | |||||||||
Conscientious Objectors who took up work with a volunteer medical service like the Friends Ambulance Unit are usually thought to have become stretcher bearers and ambulance drivers, but many were kept for what was known as "General Service". William Adams was one of these men and as a Quaker CO was given the permission of the Leyton tribunal to take up work with the Friends Ambulance Unit. While the FAU did provide medical support behind the lines in France, William stayed in Britain and took up Farming. FAU men on General Service were moved around to where they were needed, and helped to provide support, guidance and - importantly - food, for Quakers and non-Quakers alike. Men like William helped the FAU to run on a day to day basis - not carrying wounded men to hospitals, but making sure those that were could do their jobs.
