MAUTHAUSEN

Today on the narrow winding road that leads up to the forbidding granite wall of the camp one passes visitors in coaches as much as cyclists. Mauthausen concentration camp, in Austria, was mostly used for extermination through hard labour; it was also a camp that ‘specialised’ in ‘Incorrigible Political Enemies of the Reich.’ Today it has become a site of a growing number of memorials and school visits.
