DICK SHEPPARD
Dick Sheppard chaplain in World War One and vicar of St Martin-in-the-Fields made the church a refuge for soldiers returning from the war and the homeless.
Dick, as he was known from his popular radio broadcasts, was a committed pacifist who as a result of a letter he wrote to the press in 1934 founded the Peace Pledge Union which is still actively campaigning for peace today.
