PEACE PAGODA Battersea Park, London. Erected 1985

PEACE PAGODA

The pagoda was built by Japanese Buddhist nuns and monks in 1985 on the south side of the river Thames with magnificent views of it from across the river. It was the first pagoda to be build in any western capital and a rare example of a major monument dedicated entirely to peace.

Since its erection it has become a popular site for peace events.

Its purpose, according to the Buddhist Nipponzan Myohoji Order, is to provide a focus for people of all races and creeds and help unite them in the search for peace.

A similar pagoda was build in Milton Keynes.
