SYLVIA PANKHURST mura.l 402 Old Ford Road E3.

SYLVIA PANKHURS

Sylvia Pankhurst unlike her mother and sister opposed World War One and became a leading opponent orchestrating ‘her own war against war’.
Shocked at the effects of the war on the home front she spent the war helping the poor in the East End of London including setting up a creche at a disused pub the Gunmakers’ Arms renaming it the The Mothers’ Arms.
At the same time, she was speaking, writing and campaigning around the country against the war and publishing the ‘Women's Dreadnaught’ criticizing the government’s prosecution of the war and its inadequate support for the poor especially women.

After the war she continued campaigning against many of the forces that could cause even more devastation in the future. The anti arial bombardment memorial outside her home is a prescient example.
