The three posters below provide a quick visual snapshot of the conscientious objector’s experience in the 1914-19 war. The posters can be viewed on line or printed (also as large posters) and later in the year will have links to specially prepared text. On the 5th January 1916 the Military Service Act came into law.
Compulsory conscription into the military
came into force for the first time in Britain.
Despite strong resistance in parliament a clause about ‘conscientious objection’ was inserted into the Act with very mixed outcomes. The war experience for conscientious objectors varied. Some died, some had mental breakdowns, and many resolved to work for a better warless world for the rest of their lives.
