Bristol Grand Council Chamber

100 years ago in Bristol’s Grand Council Chamber Walter Ayles, a Bristol councillor, appeared before a Military Service Tribunal and made his objection to being conscripted clear: Slaughter is no Remedy.

Bristol’s ‘Remembering the real WW1’ put on a re-renactment of the original tribunal based on contemporary records. This took place in the Grand Council Chamber where the original Tribunal took place and added a poignancy to the event.

The re-enactment was follows by a discussion about conscientious objection led by Lois Bibbings. The audience of 100 plus were asked how many would have been conscientious objectors. A very small number put their hands up.
