CARL PHILIP SCHWINDT 1884 -

support

The son of a German immigrant, Carl was one of many COs caught between his refusal to fight and the army’s endless need for more men. Central London was home to many men of military age who were either naturalised Germans or descended from German families. Several of these men became Conscientious Objectors, often for the same political and religious reasons as other COs, but others were determined to resist being conscripted to fight against men who could have been relations. Carl was an absolutist CO and refused all forms of alternative service, going so far as to refuse the Home Office Scheme and willingly decided to stay in prison for the duration of the war.
