ALEXANDER RAMAGE CARROL 1882 - 1918

support

Alexander Ramage CARROL was born about 1892 and lived in Leith, near Edinburgh, a clerk and stenographer. On applying to the Leith Military Service Tribunal he was refused any recognition as a conscientious objector, but at the County Appeal Tribunal he was allowed exemption from combatant service, entailing call-up on 31 March 1916 to the 1st Scottish Company, Non-Combatant Corps, which he accepted. On 29 May he was shipped to France from Southampton (alongside some of the COs who were later formally sentenced to death, but reprieved), arriving on 30 May. He served until October 1918, when he developed bronchial pneumonia, probably associated with the influenza epidemic, and died on 9 October 1918.
He is buried in Etaples Military Cemetery, France.
